The last mission in Mass Effect 2 (SPOILERS) (no replies)

Before I write anything here I repeat:

There will be big game ruining spoilers

Ok, so I finished Mass Effect 2 a few days ago and it was a great game throughout, but one thing which stood out for me above all else was the final mission. The fact that I had got to know my team over 20 hours of play and 2 character speciffic missions each, only to discover that they could be wrenched away from me if I made the wrong choices or didn't fight well enough really drew me into the game. It was a great mechanic and uniquely amoung all of the games I have played added a real feeling that what I was doing mattered, made me genually affraid that I wouldn't be up to scratch and charcters I cared about would be killed.

I should add here that I played the game on insane first run through, so everything was a challenge and there was a real risk of loosing people; for example on that bit where you have to release heat in the pipe your computer expert is crawling through. I lost thane because I sent him through the pipe and the door jammed.

I'd love to hear some other peoples thoughts on this; What did you think of the game/ending? Has this game mechanic been used in other places? How on earth are they going to continue the story in Mass Effect 3 when it divulged into so many threads?

Research and Development Mod for Half-Life 2 (no replies)

If you've got Half-Life 2 for the PC (and if not, what the fuck's wrong with you? Go get the Orange Box already!) then you'll definitely want to check out this recent mod, Research and Development.

It's set in the HL2 world but is an adventure game rather than an action game, you never pick up a weapon and work through the levels solving puzzles using the incredible physics engine that Source provides. It's not particularly long and only suffers from a couple of frustrating bits, and of course, it's free!

So get to it already:

Spore (no replies)

I finally got around to playing Spore at the weekend (saw the whole game off in one mega sitting, not done that in years!) and it's really very good.

Do other people have it? I was thinking of setting up an Inappropriate Behaviour Sporecast if we've got enough people.

(For those who don't know a sporecast is a list of creatures, buildings, etc that players have created. Subscribe to the cast and those items will appear in your game.)

Monkey Island remake (1 reply)

So it looks like they're remaking the original, classic adventure game Secret of Monkey Island for PC and Xbox Live Arcade, same game but all new graphics, music and voice acting all the dialogue.

Sounds like it could go either way, but I'm very hopeful. Adventure games like this *should* be remade, the only barrier to entry is the crappy graphics and interfaces on what are otherwise incredible games.

However what shouldn't ever happen is let Captain Bland and his Squadron of Meh-anaughts over at Telltale games make a new Monkey Island.

Oh dear :(
